FAQ on Medical On-Call Service Berlin:

What is the difference between an on-call service and an emergency room?

An on-call medical service and a hospital emergency room (Notaufnahme) cover different medical situations. The on-call service — whether the statutory 116 117 line or a private provider such as RAB Berlin — is the right contact for acute but not life-threatening complaints that arise outside regular practice hours. Typical examples are high fever, severe pain, feverish respiratory infections, acute gastrointestinal problems, urinary tract infections or migraine attacks. The hospital emergency room, by contrast, is designed for life-threatening situations: chest pain, breathing difficulties, unconsciousness, suspected stroke or heart attack, serious injuries or poisoning. If life is in danger, always dial 112 first. In all other acute cases, the on-call service is usually the faster, calmer and economically more reasonable solution — and you stay in your familiar environment instead of waiting for hours in an overcrowded emergency department.

When should I seek medical help?

You should seek medical help whenever symptoms appear suddenly, clearly exceed what you can manage on your own or worsen markedly within a few hours. Classic reasons include sudden high fever, persistent or severe headaches, stubborn coughs, respiratory infections, acute gastrointestinal complaints with vomiting or diarrhoea, urinary tract infections, allergic reactions, acute back pain, migraine attacks and any unexplained pain that wakes you from sleep. For elderly relatives, small children or chronically ill family members it is sensible to seek an early medical opinion before a complaint escalates over the weekend or at night. RAB Berlin visits you at home daily between 6 a.m. and midnight — ideal when your family doctor is closed, when travelling to a practice is unreasonable or when you simply want to avoid crowded waiting rooms. When in doubt, it is better to call once too often than too rarely.

Who covers the costs of the on-call service?

A private medical on-call service such as RAB Berlin bills according to the German official scale of medical fees (Gebührenordnung für Ärzte, GOÄ). Privately insured patients and civil servants entitled to subsidy (Beihilfe) usually receive full reimbursement from their insurer or subsidy office, since the services correspond to the agreed tariff terms. Self-payers receive a transparent invoice and can pay in cash, by EC card or credit card directly on site. Many international travel and expat health insurers also reimburse the visit on presentation of the medical report and invoice — particularly relevant for tourists and business travellers. Patients with statutory German health insurance can use the service as self-payers, but the statutory funds do not reimburse private medical services. On request we issue the invoice in English, which speeds up processing with international insurers. Our team is happy to outline expected costs in advance.
