Deciding whether to call an emergency doctor is one of the most important medical assessments that people without medical training must make in everyday life. Calling too early feels wrong, calling too late can be life-threatening. This article explains objectively when calling emergency services is mandatory, which number applies in Berlin, and when a private medical on-call service is the right choice instead.

The Emergency Number in Berlin – 112

The emergency number for the rescue service in Berlin is 112. It is valid nationwide, is free, available around the clock, and works on any mobile phone even without credit or a SIM card. Anyone in Berlin who needs an emergency doctor or ambulance dials only this number.

112 is not the same as 116 117, which reaches the statutory health insurance on-call service for non-life-threatening complaints. This distinction is medically relevant: 112 activates the rescue service with emergency doctor and ambulance, while 116 117 provides outpatient on-call care.

When Must an Ambulance Be Called?

The rescue service is exclusively for life-threatening situations. These include unconsciousness or no response to verbal stimuli, suspected heart attack – identified by persistent chest pain, radiation to the arm or jaw, sweating, and shortness of breath, suspected stroke – identified by sudden paralysis of one side of the body, loss of speech, or drooping mouth corner, severe shortness of breath that worsens rapidly, uncontrollable heavy bleeding, severe injuries following an accident, and seizures that do not stop or occur in people with no known history of epilepsy.

In all these situations: call 112 immediately, remain calm, and fully inform the dispatch center. The dispatcher will guide you through the call and give instructions until the rescue service arrives.

When an Emergency Doctor is Not the Right Choice

Many people call the rescue service for complaints that are medically important but not life-threatening – high fever, severe cold, back pain, urinary tract infections, or the need for a medical certificate. This is understandable but strains rescue service capacity and lengthens waiting times for genuine emergencies.

For acute but stable complaints outside regular practice hours, a private medical on-call service such as RAB Berlin is the medically and organizationally correct choice. RAB comes as a house call directly to the patient – without drawing on emergency resources, promptly and fully equipped for outpatient care.

How Long Does It Take for an Emergency Doctor to Arrive in Berlin?

The response time – that is, the time between the emergency call and arrival of the rescue service – is typically eight minutes in Berlin according to the Berlin Rescue Service Act for life-threatening emergencies. In practice, the actual travel time may vary depending on traffic conditions, time of day, and call volume.

For non-life-threatening complaints where no rescue service is needed but timely medical assistance is required, RAB Berlin is typically on-site within 60 to 90 minutes – without drawing on rescue service resources. More information about our service can be found here.

The Right Decision in Case of Doubt

If you are unsure whether an emergency exists, you should call 112 in case of doubt. The dispatch center can assess the situation by phone and decide whether to send an ambulance or whether another form of care would be more appropriate. Calling 112 does not automatically obligate a rescue service deployment – dispatchers are trained to make exactly this assessment.

For complaints that are clearly not life-threatening, RAB Berlin is the appropriate contact. A single call is enough to assess the situation by phone and arrange a house visit if needed.
